BASIC WILDERNESS FIRST AID IS AN INTENSIVE 8- TO 10-HOUR COURSE FOR THOSE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN WILDERNESS RECREATION. THIS COURSE MAY ALSO MEET THE NEEDS OF VOLUNTEERS AND PROFESSIONALS WHO LEAD GROUPS ON SHORT TRIPS IN RELATIVELY LOW-RISK SITUATIONS.

Here is the basic class outline:  

Unit 1: Environmental Hazards

Heat exposure and heat illness

Hypothermia

Frostbite and Raynaud's disease

Altitude exposure and altitude illness

Lightning

Sunburn

Unit 2: Wilderness Wound and Burn Care

Bleeding control

Shock

Checking carotid and radial pulse and capillary refill

Types of wounds

Wound cleaning

Infection

Bandaging

Unit 3:  Bilogical Hazards

Contaminated water and disinfection techniques

Mosquitoes, ticks and disease

Protecting yourself (clothing, repellant, knowledge)

Spiders, bees and wasps

Anaphylaxis

Venomous snakes

Hazardous animals

Hazardous plants

Unit 4:  Bone and Joint Injuries

Bones and joints

Mechanisms of injury

Assessing bone and joing injuries

Checking posterior tibial and dorsalis pedis pulse

Handling fractured limbs

Alingning fractures to stabilize and restore distal functions

Splinting

Unit 5:  Assessing and treating other problems

Eye and facial injuries 

Head injuries (assessing and making evacuation decisions)

Spinal injuries (assessment including clearing spine)

Chest and abdominal injuries (assessment of chest and abdomen)

MEdical problems in the wilderness (getting patient history)
